The Company

Ever since the company was founded in 1964, Spectronic has been engaged in research, development and manufacturing of radio communications and mobile telephony. With pioneering technical innovations the company has developed a long series of successful products over the years. These products have been developed both under the Spectronic brand name but also for Philips, Plessey, Bosch, Siemens, Ericsson and other well-known companies.

During the late 70
s the worlds first unit for making selective calls with portable radios was designed by Spectronic. This technique is now one of the cornerstones for the ability to develop mobile telephones.

The development of the first handheld mobile telephone for the NMT network, the Spectronic TS200, begun in 1985. When it was launched four years later, the telephone quickly assumed a position of technical leadership. Its successor, the Spectronic Data Telephone TS220, with an integrated digital data terminal, was the first mobile telephone to enable simultaneous communication in speech, text and data.

During the second half of the 90’s the Spectronic Sidetouch Mobile for the GSM network was developed. This was the first mobile ever with a built-in digital camera. It was also featuring the very inventive Sidetouch interface, with which the user controls the entire phone by touching on the sides of the phone. With full email support, MMS, SMS, fax and a built-in web browser this phone was truly unique when it was first shown.

When the Spectronic Sidetouch Mobile was released in the year 1999 it received massive attention in media with astonishing ratings in many tests. Among many other judgements it was dubbed the ”The star of the show” by the exhibition magazine Cebit News and ”The most exciting product on CeBIT” by Swedish newspaper Expressen.

Precursor in mobile telephony

The gold medal of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, IVA, has been awarded to Spectronic. The enterprise received this distinction for among other things the development of the first mobile telephone with a built-in computer.

The Polhem prize, Sweden’s oldest and foremost technological science prize has been given to Spectronic. The prize is given to enterprises which have distinguished themselves for successful engineering on a high technological level.

Spectronic has also been appointed the Export Enterprise of the Year and the Electronic Enterprise of the Year in Sweden.
